In a stunning reversal Wednesday, US President Donald Trump signed a bill mandating the release of government files on convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The documents could shed light on the full extent of Epstein’s criminal network and connections to the powerful, though experts warn redactions and legal limits may leave many details in the dark.
It is unclear whether the Senate would take up the measure if the House passes it. Trump would also need to sign the legislation to compel the release of the documents.
The US president also requested a probe into the late sex offender’s connections to JPMorgan Chase and ex-Treasury Secretary Larry Summers
He referenced the president by name multiple times in messages to Ghislaine Maxwell and an author in Trump’s orbit, according to emails released by House Democrats
Maxwell, a convicted sex offender connected to Jeffrey Epstein, was moved to a less restrictive federal prison this summer. Congress is investigating allegations of special treatment.
