Sean McDonough Joins ESPN’s ‘Monday Night Football’

Sean McDonough will be the new play-by-play announcer on “Monday Night Football,”ESPN announced Monday. McDonough takes over Mike Tirico, who is leaving ESPN for NBC Sports.

Aside f-rom McDonough’s addition, the broadcasting team for the upcoming 2016-17 season of “Monday Night Football” remains unchanged with analyst Jon Gruden and reporter Lisa Sal-ters.

McDonough will call his first “Monday Night Football” broadcast at the Aug. 7 preseason Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio. He is the fifth play-by-play announcer in the history of “Monday Night Football,” following Keith Jackson, Frank Gifford, Al Michaels and Tirico.

“This is a dream come true,” said McDonough.  “One of my favorite memories of my childhood was watching Monday Night Football with my Dad, who I know is smiling down on me today. I am humbled and deeply honored to have the opportunity to be a part of the most iconic franchise in the history of sports television.”

McDonough has served as a broadcaster on for the World Series, the NCAA Final Four and the Olympic Games, and has focused in recent years on coverage of college football, college basketball and Major League Baseball.

McDonough has been with ESPN since 2000, rejoining the network after an earlier sting f-rom 1989 to 1995. F-rom 1988 to 2004, McDonough was the television play by play announcer for the Boston Red Sox.
