3 year oldApple has unveiled its latest product range, announcing the iPhone 13, Apple Watch Series 7, a new iPad and an improved iPad Mini.
CEO Tim Cook fronted the company's autumn product event overnight, headlined by the new iteration of the iPhone.
Read on for details on the biggest announcements.
iPhone 13
The iPhone 13 has been "completely rearchitected" on the inside to make room for a larger battery, which will provide up to 1.5 hours of extra battery life in the mini model and 2.5 hours in the normal sized version.
Like last year, there are two versions: a 6.1-inch model and a 5.4-inch mini model. Storage starts at 128GB, with 256GB and 512GB versions also available. The base iPhone 13 starts at $US829, with the mini a hundred dollars cheaper.
The new model also features a smaller "notch", which is what that cutout at the top of the screen is called. The result is a less noticeable intrusion on the phone's display area.
The screen's super retina XDR display is 28 per cent brighter than before to make it easier to view when you're outside. Its power efficiency has also been improved.
The design of the phone itself is broadly similar to that of the iPhone 12, with the biggest change coming in the rear camera, where the modules are now arranged diagonally instead of vertically.
One of the cameras has a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens, with a larger sensor that captures 50 per cent more light, improving photos in darker environments. The other has an ultra-wide lens.
Perhaps the coolest new feature is "Cinematic Mode", an addition to the phone's video capturing capabilities which Apple says will let you "effortlessly create cinema-grade videos" even with no filmmaking experience.
Cinematic Mode is able to hold focus on a subject even when the person is moving, and it can transition between different focuses in real time. It anticipates when a subject is about to enter the frame, and can tell when a subject moves their head away from the camera - automatically shifting the focus away to follow their gaze and then shifting back to them when they look at the camera again.
It shoots in Dolby Vision HDR.
Apple also placed great emphasis on the power of the new phone's A15 Bionic chip, which has six cores: four high performance and two high efficiency. It says the CPU is "50 per cent faster than the leading competition".
And the company is promising improved 5G coverage. Smart Data mode will automatically shift your phone to LTE when 5G speeds are not needed.
The iPhone 13 comes in five new colours: pink, blue, midnight, starlight and red.
iPhone 13 Pro
The souped-up version of the iPhone 13 features three new rear cameras, all of which have night mode. A new macro mode lets you capture subjects as close as 2cm. The Pro can film in up to 4K at 30fps.The display is brighter than the base model, reaching 1000 nits, and features a variable refresh rate that ranges from 10Hz to as high as 120Hz.
There are four colours: graphite, gold, silver and "sierra blue". Prices start at $US999.
Apple Watch Series 7
The new Apple Watch is a smidgeon larger than the Series 6 version, coming in 31mm and 45mm sizes.
It features slimmer, 1.7mm bezels around its display. Apple says the larger screen can fit 50 per cent more text and a full keyboard.
Apparently that doesn't hurt the watch's durability. It's still able to be worn underwater, and now has an IP6X rating, meaning it can withstand dust.
Apple emphasised the improvement to the watch's battery life. It has a USB-C port now, and can reportedly go from 0 per cent charge to 80 per cent in 45 minutes.
The software has also been upgraded. The presentation focused on cycling, where the watch can now detect when you start and stop exercising and give you more accurate data accordingly.
It also has fall support, so if you suffer a catastrophic fall the watch can contact emergency services for you.
The Series 7 comes in black, blue, red, gold and green, and starts at $US399.
iPad Mini
The new iPad Mini is larger than its predecessor, featuring an 8.3-inch display. Like most of the other products announced today, it has thinner bezels than before.
Apple stressed the improved performance of this version, pointing to a CPU that's 40 per cent faster than in the previous generation. The GPU is 80 per cent faster.
There's a new 12 megapixel ultrawide camera on its front, which can work with the Centre Stage feature, which automatically follows you if you move to keep you in the middle of the frame. Audio-wise, there's a stereo speaker system.
Like the Series 7 watch, it charges using a USB-C port.
The cheapest model starts at $US499, and that price rises sharply if you choose a cellular model instead of one that just supports wifi.
