8 year oldBack in 2005, Lil Wayne was in talks to join Roc-A-Fella records. Though those negotiations were well known in the hip-hop community, the details of the talks (and why they broke down) are not. In a recent interview with DJ Drama, Wayne finally gives us a little clarity and the story is hilarious.
According to Wayne, Jay asked him to come to his 40/40 club to discuss a potential offer, which turned out to be only $175,000 dollars.
“You know when I went out to talk to him about being at Roc-A-Fella, and mind you this was years ago. First of all, he was at the 40/40 in the daytime, and when I got up there he was talkin’, it was Denzel [Washington], it was Derek Jeter…I was like, ‘This is his clique?’ And they up there just laughin’ at jokes I just don’t get. He literally sat me down next to him, and this whe-re all that is going on at, and he sat me right here. Like ‘You ain’t a part of this,’ you know? And he would talk to me on the side after every joke.”
Then Wayne says Jay gave him the amount he would pay him to sign: $175,000. “That man offered me 175 [thousand dollars]. Two teeth in my mouth is 175. My bottom teeth. So we laugh about that all the time.”
It’s all love though. DJ Drama ends the story by asking if we might ever hear a Wayne Carter/Sean Carter song again, to which Weezy replies, “Oh, you’re going to see a lot more.” Guess we’ll have to wait to see what that means.
