Ellen DeGeneres and her Aussie wife Portia De Rossi have reportedly taken drastic action in the wake of the US election.
Ellen DeGeneres and wife Portia De Rossi have reportedly left the US and moved to the UK in the wake of the US election.
According to The Wrap, the former talk show host and the actress have relocated to England in recent weeks, reportedly telling friends the move across the pond was primarily due to Donald Trump’s election win.
A source told the outlet that DeGeneres, 66, and De Rossi, 51, have settled into the Cotswolds, a rural region in south-central England that is approximately two hours from London.
It’s believed the couple have no plans to move back to the US and are in the process of putting their Montecito, California estate on the market.
Another source tells TMZ that the pair actually bought their new UK residence before the November 6 election, but were “very disillusioned” with Mr Trump’s win they immediately decided “to get the hell out” of the US.
DeGeneres has long been an advocate for Vice President Harris, who lost the election to Mr Trump. In the past, the comedian has sung Ms Harris’ praises on social media, writing in August, “There’s nothing more powerful than a woman whose time has come!! I can’t wait for @KamalaHarris to be our next president.”
Before the election, DeGeneres also urged her fellow citizens to hit the polls by reposting The Seneca Project’s video highlighting various women’s movements in the US.
“Let’s vote like our lives depend on it. Because they do!” she captioned the post.
DeGeneres is not the only high-profile star to leave the US after Mr Trump’s win. Former Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria has also revealed she and her family fled what she described as the “dystopian” country for homes in Mexico and Spain.
“I had my whole adult life here [in California],” Longoria told Marie Claire earlier this moth. “But even before [the pandemic], it was changing. The vibe was different. And then Covid happened, and it pushed it over the edge. Whether it’s the homelessness or the taxes, not that I want to s**t on California — it just feels like this chapter in my life is done now.”
The 49-year-old actress said the recent presidential election caused her to make the call.
“The shocking part is not that [Trump] won. It’s that a convicted criminal who spews so much hate could hold the highest office,” she said. “If he keeps his promises, it’s going to be a scary place.”
