NIKKI Haley, one of Donald Trump’s strongest Cabinet members as the US Ambassador to the United Nations, has shocked many by resigning her post.

UNITED Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley is stepping down, according to a report.

US President Donald Trump has accepted Ms Haley’s resignation, but the timing of her departure is unclear, Axios reported.

Ms Haley, the former Republican governor of South Carolina, discussed her resignation with Mr Trump during a White House visit last week, the website said.

She joined the Trump administration in January 2017.

It was rumoured she may have been the author of the anonymous New York Timesopinion piece in which the author said they were part of the resistance within the Trump Administration working against the US president.

Ms Haley was very good at being able to support and defend Mr Trump but also commanded the respect of the international diplomatic community.
