There’s been a huge wave of fan backlash after Lauryn Hill & The Fugees cancelled their sold tour with zero explanation
Lauryn Hill and The Fugees have announced the surprise cancellation of their upcoming tour, leaving fans devastated. The tour was due to kick off at the end of this week with a show in Tampa, Florida, on August 9.
Lauryn, 49, and The Fugees announced the cancellation on Tuesday, according to Variety.
No reason for the tour being called off was given, leaving fans shocked and disappointed.
Many only learned that the Fugees’ tour had been called off after spotting emails that stated, “Your event has been cancelled. A refund will be on its way to your account soon.”
Despite getting their money back, many fans were saddened, and even angered, by the abrupt decision.
“Exactly why I didn’t even flinch when this ‘tour’ was announced, lol. Some of us know better,” one fan joked on X, formerly Twitter.
“Shocker,” a second wrote sarcastically.
Others posted photos of the emails they got about refunds, begging for answers.
“Please say it isn’t true, @MsLaurynHill! Did the Fugees cancel their Atlanta show?? Say no please. @wyclef?” questioned one hopeful fan.“Man they cancelled Lauryn Hill and The Fugees concert next month,” commented a second, adding that they “were looking forward to it.”
“SMH! WTH! Just got a email saying Lauryn Hill concert cancelled at the Hollywood Bowl! SMH! Sooooo disappointed!” complained a third fan.
Other commenters on X simply wondered, “What happened?”
Variety noted in its article that while no reason for the cancellation has been given, it certainly wasn’t ticket sales related.
Last week, only one show still had tickets available and that show was in Alabama.
The Fugees tour was due to kick off in Tampa, Florida, on Friday. A massive show at the Hollywood Bowl was scheduled for September 17, and there were also stops in New York and other major cities lined up.
After the North American tour wrapped up, The Fugees were scheduled to take a short break and then get back to performing in Europe.
No member of The Fugees has posted on social media about the cancellation as of this writing.
The band’s most recent post is from June, and still fans are flooding the comments with questions and complaints about the tour being called off.
“Did yall just cancel or am I being pranked?” one person posted.
“So disappointed the tour is cancelled,” a second wrote.
This is the third year in a row Lauryn and her group, which reunited, have cancelled a show or an entire tour.
One fan noted that the pattern is hurtful to fans, writing on X, “IT’S SO DISHEARTENING BEING A FAN OF LAURYN HILL. Last October, an hour before the show in Dallas, it was cancelled with no warning. I tried again this run even when EVERYONE clowned me saying I was fooling for trying. Cancelled AGAIN. I love Lauryn man. But damn yo. DO BETTER.”
In November 2023, Lauryn and the Fugees were on tour when she announced that they would cancel the rest of the year’s dates.
She vowed to resume touring in 2024.
“As many of you may known, I’ve been battling serious vocal strain for the past month,” she said at the time.
“I made it through each show by taking prescribed prednisone, but this can be detrimental to the body when taken in large amounts over long periods of time. In order to prevent any long term negative affect on my voice and my body, I need to take time off to allow for real vocal recovery so that I can discontinue the medication completely.”
A reunion tour with the Fugees was first announced in 2022 and postponed amid ongoing Covid outbreaks.
