This article is more than
5 year oldJanelle Monae
The Dirty Computer singer wore a mix of her tour pieces and new accessories for the desert performance to focus on an overall Afrofuture theme. Monae's aim is to make the show feel like past, present and future at once, said her stylist Alexandra Mandelkorn. Especially of note were two black and red military-style jackets she wore while closing and opening her Friday set.
"She's like some starship commander from an amazing Afrofuture planet," Mandelkorn said. "There's a through line of militaristic elements throughout the show. It gives a commanding presence and evokes the sense of leadership."
Ariana Grande
"I couldn't decide what outfit to wear, so I just wore all of them," Grande told fans during her headlining set on Sunday. Indeed, stylist Law Roach told THR on Friday that they still hadn't finalized her looks. She ended up wearing four iterations of her signature pairing of a flared mini skirt with a bustier top and thigh-high boots in lavender, burgundy and pink (Versace and Michael Ngo custom-made a look each).
Her sleeves stole the show — from dramatic pouf shoulders and sleeves that wrapped down her arm like ribbons to a look with billowing shawl-like sleeves.
"Barely recovering from this never ending fairytale that unfolded last night... What a moment in pop-culture history," Ngo wrote on Instagram.
Rosalia
While performing "Con Altura" with J Balvin, Rosalia donned a custom pink Louis Vuitton logo-print tracksuit with a cropped top in a nod to the fashion resurgence of '80s logo-mania.
Actress Amandla Stenberg told THR she was most impressed by Rosalia's set. "I think that she is just an icon and definitely on the frontier of what it means to be a pop star now," Stenberg said.
Billie Eilish
Like Rosalia, Eilish is styled by Samantha Burkhart and also wore a Louis Vuitton ensemble with allover look-at-me logos — an oversized denim jacket and jeans made by knockoff artist Imran Potato (both sold out at imranpotato.com) and paired with Oakley sunglasses.
Katy Perry
Perry surprised fans during Zedd's Coachella show to sing "365" with the musician. She stepped out in a custom red Area jumpsuit with a silver mesh overlay and silver boots. Detailing included two floral brooches in the center of her bandeau top and large silver earrings.
Jaden Smith
Smith hit the Indio stage in a black shirt that read "ERYS," the name of his forthcoming album, and a zip-up black utility vest and matching Dickies 874 work pants personalized with a patchwork of bold graphics. He accessorized with multiple layered necklaces and bracelets, including a coordinating oversize pink chainlink set.
Kacey Musgraves
For her Coachella debut, Musgraves went full-on into the fringe trend in a sunny orange, fringed Balmain dress cinched with a braided metallic belt (and, in freewheeling festival style, sans shoes).
Cardi B
With her hair blonde and ironed straight (a contrast from her blue-and-pink ombre hair at the Revolve festival party), the rapper donned a belted floral-embellished cream bustier over a blue bodysuit with ruffled fringe hot pants and fishnet hosiery for her surprise appearance with DJ Snake.
Burna Boy
In another riff on a luxe designer label, Afrofusion singer Damini Ogulu (a.k.a. Burna Boy) stepped out in a custom knee-length Burberry tan-and-yellow plaid jacket and matching trousers with fringed sleeves and hems.
Khalid
The R&B singer’s palm tree-patterned, high-contrast short set (paired with coordinating white and black Adidas sneaks) looked just right for a desert night.
