Winona Ryder says Keanu Reeves refused director’s request to yell abuse at her on movie set

Winona Ryder has opened up about a time when Keanu Reeves refused to partake in an alleged request from director Francis Ford Coppola while filming the 1992 movie Dracula.

Ryder, 48, recently told The Sunday Times that, at the time, she was doing a scene in which her character was supposed to be crying.

Per the outlet, Coppola reportedly was off-camera shouting insults, such as “You wh*re!” and according to Ryder, he tried to have her male co-stars do the same in order to get tears from her.

“To put it in context I’m supposed to be crying,” Ryder said. “Literally, Richard E. Grant, Anthony Hopkins, Keanu … Francis was trying to get all of them to yell things that would make me cry, but Keanu wouldn’t, Anthony wouldn’t. … It just didn’t work.

“I was, like, really? It kind of did the opposite,” the actress said.

Ryder said that she and the Oscar-winning director are “good now”.

Meanwhile, according to People magazine, Reeves’ refusal has since led to a long friendship between the two.

In 2018, Ryder revealed she and Reeves had even been married by a Romanian priest while filming a wedding scene for 1992 film.

“We actually got married in Dracula. No, I swear to god I think we’re married in real life,” Ryder told a disbelieving Reeve during a joint interview with Entertainment Weekly in August 2018.

“In that scene, (director) Francis (Ford Coppola) used a real Romanian priest. We shot the master and he did the whole thing. So I think we’re married.”

Speaking to US show The Talk, Reeves joked that marriage to Ryder is “awesome” and revealed the actress is convinced the two are legally wed.

“Once in a while, I will get a text, ‘Hello, husband,’” he said. “I didn’t really believe her, and then Francis Ford Coppola, the director of Dracula, contacted Winona and said publicly that, yeah, that really happened, the priest did a full ceremony, and Winona and I got married.”

Following Dracula, Ryder and Reeves, 55, have reunited on-screen for 2006’s A Scanner Darkly, 2009’s The Private Lives Of Pippa Lee and Destination Wedding in 2018.

Ryder has most recently starred in HBO’s miniseries The Plot Against America and Netflix’s Stranger Things.
 

The star made headlines this week with comments from the same wide-ranging Sunday Times interview, in which she detailed a shocking run-in with actor Mel Gibson.

The 48-year-old actress shared of her experience chatting with the star at a party in 1995: “We were at a crowded party with one of my good friends, and Mel Gibson was smoking a cigar, and we were all talking and he said to my friend, who’s gay, ‘Oh wait, am I gonna get AIDS?’ And then something came up about Jews, and he said, ‘You’re not an oven dodger, are you?’”
 

Ryder – who revealed Gibson tried to apologise to her at a later date – was particularly upset by the actor’s comments as she “had family who died in the camps”.

The incident was first reported in an interview in GQ in 2010, the same year tapes of Gibson’s profanity-laced, derogatory tirades were made public.

Today, following the unearthed comments, the actor was axed from Netflix’s highly anticipated Chicken Run sequel.

A rep for Coppola did not immediately respond to Fox News’ request for comment following Ryder’s Dracula revelation.
