After 22 days and four House Republican speaker nominees, the Louisiana representative will be the new House speaker. In the 220-209 tally, all Democrats voted for House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

The House voted 220-209 Wednesday to elect GOP Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana as speaker, elevating a staunch conservative to the top post after three weeks of Republican infighting doomed other candidates aiming to succeed ousted leader Kevin McCarthy.

With a speaker now in place, lawmakers can finally get back to work, with many eager to pass aid to Israel and address a looming government-funding deadline next month.
