8 year oldMicah X. Johnson, of Mesquite, is one of four people police said were responsible for targeting police officers at a peaceful protest against nationwide police brutality.
Police said officers cornered Johnson and negotiated with him for hours before talks broke down. Dallas Police Chief David Brown said Johnson told officers he was upset about recent shootings involving police and “wanted to kill white people. Especially white officers.”
He told police he was “not affiliated with any groups,” and he said he “did this alone,” Brown said.
Sources told the Los Angeles Times that Johnson has no ties to terror groups and no known criminal history. He has lived in the Dallas area and has family members living in Mesquite, Texas, east of Dallas, the newspaper reports, citing police sources.
A black SUV was found at the scene registered to Delphene Johnson, who is Johnson’s mother according to Facebook posts and public records, NBC Dallas-Fort Worth reports.
Live helicopter video from the news station showed police at her home in Mesquite.
The suspect was a member of the US Army Reserve, according to a US government source.
The Texas attack came during a Black Lives Matter protest organised in the wake of two high-profile shootings of black men by white police officers.
