The U.S. defeated the Netherlands, 2-0, to win their fourth Women’s World Cup title in 28 years. 3 minutes ago

LYON, France—The expectation was always for the World Cup to end this way, with the greatest powerhouse women’s soccer has ever known raising the trophy for the fourth time in 28 years. Other story lines tacked themselves onto the team’s run, from the rise of European rivals to scrutinized goal celebrations to a bizarre dispute with the President. Anyone of them could have derailed it.

But on Sunday, in the noise and heat of Lyon, nothing more had to be said. The U.S. was a world champion again.
