New York Jets defensive lineman Quinnen Williams was arrested Thursday night after attempting to board a plane with a gun, authorities told NorthJersey.com and USA TODAY NETWORK New Jersey.

Williams, the third overall selection in the 2019 NFL draft, is facing a criminal possession of a weapon charge, according to the Port Authority Police Department. They said that Williams had a permit to carry the weapon in Alabama, where he went to college.

Around 9:15 p.m. ET, Williams tried to board his flight at LaGuardia when the weapon was detected. The Port Authority Police said that Williams was still being processed as of late Thursday night, and that the Queens District Attorney will handle the matter going forward.

The Jets did not immediately respond to a request for a comment.

Williams, 22, starred at the University of Alabama in 2019, where he was regarded as one of the most dominant defensive players in the nation before the Jets picked them higher than they had selected any defensive player in franchise history. He had a quiet rookie season, with injuries limiting him to 13 games. He finished 15 tackles, 13 assists and 2½ sacks.
