Social media is having a field day over YouTuber Jake Paul’s next opponent after his victory over 58-year-old Mike Tyson.
Jake Paul still has a long way to go if he wants any respect as a boxer.
As you can see in the video player above, Paul was completely untroubled defeating a 58-year-old Mike Tyson, whose best days came in the last millennium.
UFC 309: JONES VS MIOCIC | Heavyweight champion and all-time great Jon Jones will defend his title against former champion Stipe Miocic | SUN 17 NOV 2PM AEDT | Order Now with Main Event on Kayo Sports. Main Event on Kayo Sports and Foxtel is the exclusive home of UFC Pay-Per-View.
The fight, which was sanctioned and will appear on the official record of both fighters, improved Paul to 11-1 from his 12-fight career.
A quick look at his opponents to date, however, paints a bizarre picture for a guy that made his name and millions via YouTube videos.
A mash-up of UFC fighters well past their prime and a former NBA slam dunk champion are part of that record.
It also includes his only defeat, which many consider came against his only somewhat respected boxing foe, Tommy Fury.
The younger brother of former heavyweight world champion Tyson Fury, Tommy won a split decision victory over Paul in Saudi Arabia in February 2023.
Adding Tyson to his record does nothing for his credibility, although Paul was again talking up a big game after the fight.Asked who he would fight next, Paul said: “Anyone I want.
“This is the biggest event, over 120 million people on Netflix, we crashed the site.
“The biggest US boxing gate, $20 million, US history, everyone is next on the list.
“I’m not going to call out specific names.”
When the name Canelo Alvarez came up, who Paul has called out in the past, he stated: “Canelo needs me, so I’m not even going to try to call him out.
“He knows he wants a payday so he knows where the money man is at.”
He’s referring to a 34-year-old Mexican with a 62-2 career record with two draws and a net worth in excess of $425 million.
One of the most accomplished boxers in history, Alvarez is so far out of Paul’s sphere it’s barely worth the effort to write about.
Another boxing great, undefeated American and Hall of Famer Andre Ward, was asked during Netflix’s coverage of the Tyson-Paul fight what Jake should do next to further his career.“I don’t think Canelo wants to do that right now,” he said. “He could change his mind if the number’s right.
“I really think what Jake is after is legitimacy. He’s got the money, he’s got the followers, I think it’s time for Jake to call somebody out a lot younger than Mike Tyson, a bit more dangerous.
“And somebody the boxing public can say ‘oh, we respect you, even if you lose, you took that challenge’.”
Therein lies the issue, until Paul fights someone legit, he won’t get the respect he so clearly craves.
Nico Ali Walsh, the grandson of Muhammad Ali, took it further when he posted to X after the fight.
“Jake Paul is an embarrassment to this sport,” he wrote. “If my grandfather was still around, (Paul) would call him out. Absolutely no shame … Love you Mike.”
Broadcaster Stephen A. Smith also weighed into Paul’s conundrum.
“Love Mike Tyson. Always have, always will. But 58 is 58. Plus the legs just wasn’t there,” he wrote.
“Old is old. Thank God he didn’t get knocked out. Now it’s time for Jake Paul to get in the ring with a Top-10 fighter — or hell, a champion.
“No more BBall players, strikers from MMA, or old men. It’s time for Jake to get into a real fight. He’s good enough! Make it happen.”
A large portion of the fascination of Saturday’s event was the hope of many that Tyson might just find a fraction of his old ability and knock Paul out.
Veteran rapper Flavor Flav captured the sentiments of most when he tweeted pre-fight: “We may not agree about politics or religion … but we can all agree that we want Mike Tyson to knock out Jake Paul.”
Once the fight commenced, it was clear neither man was much chance of a KO.
Afterwards, fans were having a field day at the YouTube star’s expense.
“BREAKING: Jake Paul has challenged Jimmy Carter (age 100) to a boxing match after beating Mike Tyson (age 58),” came one tweet.
“Jake Paul should fight Joe Biden next,” suggested another.
“He did get in the ring once with a real boxer … he got embarrassed,” stated another.
Paul undeniably has an ability to lure boxing fans to his fights, often with the hope he will get knocked out, but they are massive moneymakers.
One fan tweeted the same line repeatedly: “I will not be tricked into watching a Jake Paul fight again.”
We’ll leave the last word to X account Sports Bruiserz, which managed to capture the thoughts of many towards Paul and his boxing career thus far.
“He knows he can’t compete with the top fighters,” they wrote. “So instead, he’s gone down the path of pure entertainment.
“No one should take him seriously. Give props for him to find a way to make millions doing it, but it’s a gimmick.”
