Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino released from prison after 8 months

Jersey Shore’s Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino has been released from prison after serving 8 months for tax evasion, E! Newsreports.

The MTV reality star and his brother Marc Sorrentino were accused in 2014 of hiding earnings from Jersey Shore between 2010 and 2012, in tax offences related to nearly $9 million in income.

His brother was sentenced to 24 months in jail, while Sorrentino served eight months for one count of tax evasion.

After his release from a federal correctional institution in Otisville, New York on Thursday, Sorrentino is expected to complete two years of supervised release and 500 hours of community service.

Sorrentino pleaded guilty to the charge and paid off his $10,000 fine and $123,000 restitution fee before his October 2018 sentencing.

Today, following his release, he thanked fans for their “love and support” in a statement to E! News.

“We are elated to finally close this chapter of our life,” the statement read. “Thank you to our family, friends and fans for the continuous love and support during this time, it brought us so much peace and comfort. We look forward to continuing our life as husband and wife and working on baby situations! We truly believe that the comeback is ALWAYS greater than the setback and we can’t wait to show the world ours.”

Court papers show Sorrentino made US$1,500 to US$48,000 per public appearance at nightclubs, bars and liquor stores during the peak of the hit MTV series.

The bulk of the booking fees would be paid in cash, some of which wasn’t reported in full as income, the indictment said.

During the trial, the star — who is now sober after struggling with drug and alcohol abuse in the past — spoke about his volunteer work teaching high school students about the risks of substance abuse.

“I found my purpose in sobriety,” he told the judge. “People can look at me and say, ‘If he can do it, I can.’”

He also apologised for his “immaturity” in handling overnight success.

“I’m deeply sorry for my past actions. Today I’m the man that I should’ve been years ago,” he said. “I’ve worked tirelessly to overcome my demons and put my life back together.”

The judge cheered his sobriety and “sincerity” in his statements to the court, the reality was, she said, “You have to pay taxes.”

“You are a grown man and grown men have responsibilities,” she added.

Sorrentino’s wife, Lauren Pesce, accompanied him as he left the federal correctional facility this week.

Hours later, he made his return to Instagram, posting a picture of him with his wife and dog with the caption: “Living my best life with my beautiful wife.”

Sorrentino’s Jersey Shore co-stars kept fans updated throughout his incarceration, even sharing photos from their prison visits.

Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi toldE! News her castmate was “having the time of his life.”

“It’s like his in a senior home, he’s playing Bingo, he’s helping people recover in jail,” she said. “We all talk to him through an email, so I talk to him like once a week. He’s in the gym a lot, so he’s probably gonna come out ripped.”
