Singer Justin Timberlake has been arrested for allegedly driving while drunk close to New York City.The 43-year-old was taken into custody after the incident in the ritzy Hamptons area of Long Island on Tuesday morning, local time.
He was released without bail following a court appearance where he was charged with one count of DWI (driving while intoxicated) as well as being cited for running a stop sign and failure to keep in his lane, reported entertainment website TMZ.
The site added that “Justin’s friends came on scene and tried to convince cops to cut him a break, but they refused”.
The singer was accompanied by his lawyer to court and was handcuffed and wearing a black shirt, jeans and Nike Air Force 1 basketball shoes. His wife Jessica Biel was not with him.
Timberlake’s spokesman nor the local police have yet commented on the arrest.
It was reported by People magazine that Timberlake had been having dinner at the American Hotel in Sag Harbor, 160km east of New York.
The restaurants serves dishes such as roasted bone marrow and veal sweetbreads (offal) as well as three types of caviars.
The publication quoted a source as saying the star drove to a friends house after leaving the restaurant and was pulled over. “Nobody was hurt,” the person said.Timberlake’s next court date has been set for July 26.
The Grammy winner is currently touring with his Forget Tomorrow World Tour.
He last performed on Saturday in Miami and has two concerts planned for Friday and Saturday in Chicago and then next week at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
The SexyBack singer has not spoken out about the incident on social media. His last post was on Sunday for Father’s Day, reported the New York Post.
