The unprecedented U.S. state visit is well under way, and President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump are out to greet the royals and a gray English fall day. Received by Kate Middleton–Catherine, Princess of Wales—and Prince William at Windsor Castle today (September 17), Melania and Kate matched in fall-ready shades of burgundy and eggplant, with statement headgear.
Melania wore a tailored gray skirt suit by Dior, in a shape that has become one of her most recognizable and failsafe silhouettes, with pointed shoulders and a nipped-in waist, her demure pencil skirt falling just below her knee. She paired it with matching dark pumps, and a dramatic, drop brim hat by Dior in a dark shade of mauve. It was a look that aligned with that of Kate Middleton, who stuck to her own go-to royal uniform in a a burgundy Emilia Wickstead coat dress, a matching hat by London-based label Jane Taylor, and a well-loved Chanel top-handle bag. Melania’s hat also complemented the shade of her husband’s tie.
A dramatic hat has long been a key component of the Melania Trump compendium of First Lady style. Her wide, statement headpiece recalled the face-eschewing and austere boater-style chapeau designed by Eric Javitts, which she wore to Trump’s second inauguration.
So far, it looks like Melania will be partaking in some sartorial British politeness, and for this occasion, leaving her American designer-heavy wardrobe back in the states. Yesterday evening, she deplaned from Air Force One wearing a tightly cinched Burberry Kensington Heritage trench coat. Dior, who made her skirt suit, is currently being designed by Jonathan Anderson, who is from Northern Ireland.
The Trumps will continue their packed schedule of grand visits, red carpets, and Royal engagements that involves most senior members of the Royal family. This evening, they will be hosted at Windsor Castle for a ceremonial welcome and a state banquet alongside Kate, William, King Charles, and Queen Camilla, as is tradition. Will Melania Trump continue her British sartorial streak or represent the states in style? More to come.
