Chappell Roan’s topless moment at The Grammys looked less sexy and more “ouch!”. Somehow, we’ve managed to make nudity uncomfortable.
The Grammy-nominated singer turned up in a sheer maroon dress held up by a chain linked to her nipple piercings.
Let that sink in, her dress was being held up and supported by her nipples. She was really putting her nipples to work - what is wrong with good old-fashioned shoulders?
The fabric of the dress looks very light, and so maybe it was fine, but the photos are painful to look at.
I’m sure if you’re a man viewing the image, you would probably just think “she looks amazing”, or perhaps more simply, “wow, boobs!”
But if you’re a woman, it hurts to look at. No woman wants anything hanging off their nipples, they’re sensitive!
I find it alarming that we’ve even managed to make even nudity look uncomfortable.
Even if Chappell isn’t in active pain, That can’t be nice to walk around in; you’d feel vulnerable, and what if you snagged it on something?
I shudder just thinking about it.
You also would not want to hug or greet anyone wearing large jewellery.
If Angelina Jolie were there, the singer would be dodging the movie star and her love of oversized emeralds.
She certainly needs to stay clear of Sabrina Carpenter and her glorious mane, that is an accident waiting to happen.
Mind you, I genuinely have no idea what the etiquette is here.

To Chappell’s credit, she’s certainly made the naked trend interesting again. It has been a complete snooze-fest for at least 18 months.
I’m sick of the see-through dress trend that has been plaguing the red carpet; it is boring and stale. It feels done like another season of The Bachelor.
It is also unimaginative at this point; it isn’t shocking or jaw-dropping anymore.
How many times can Dakota Johnson be semi-naked, until you’re less like, “oh my God” and more like, “Well, that is just our Dakota”?
The only thing I’ve enjoyed about the naked celebrity trend is that at least the ladies going almost nude at public events looked a bit more comfortable.
Most of the time, famous women look uncomfortable at formal events because they are teetering around in ridiculous high heels or are unable to sit because they’re wearing actual corsets.
Sometimes they’ll even joke on the red carpet about how they couldn’t sit in the car on the way to the event because their outfit wouldn’t let them.
I get that it is all very fashionable, but as a feminist, I can’t get around clothes that stop you from being able to do basic body movements.
As for the famous men, they’re straight-up chilling.
They’re either looking dapper but comfy in a suit, or occasionally they’ll even wear shorts to a red carpet event.
They’re not even wearing uncomfortable, tight shorts that dig into their thighs; they’re wearing wide-leg ones, and then they get extra coverage for being fashionable. It is totally unfair.
So, even though I am holding space for Chappell to make a naked look interesting again and I like how camp it is, I’m also just a bit sad that nudity, which is meant to be freeing, now looks like it hurts.
Is there any fashion trend that won’t just end in discomfort for women?
I get that beauty is pain, and fashion isn’t always about comfort, but you shouldn’t be in agony and no nipples should be harmed in the process.
You’ve got to draw a line somewhere; mine is at nipple pain.
I thought we were all about freeing the nipple, not putting the nipple to work.
