1 year oldJust when you thought the Met Gala was less crazy and more chic this year, along comes Lil Nas X.
The theme for the 2023 fashion extravaganza is Karl Lagerfeld: A Line Of Beauty in honour of the iconic designer’s work and aesthetic, but it appears the musician took the opportunity to instead dress up as the late celebrity’s beloved cat, Choupette.
The rapper – real name Montero Lamar Hill – wowed on the red carpet in a crystallised cat look by Pat McGrath and Dior Men.
The 24-year-old’s ensemble was made up entirely of glitter, crystals and pearls – with only a G-string and metallic paint covering his modesty.
Even Lil Nas X’s face was bedazzled with sparkly stones while a set of beaded whiskers appeared to rest above his rhinestoned lips.
According to Entertainment Tonight, the rapper stayed true to his catlike character, cooing “meow” as he made his way down the red carpet.
It seems the musician was not the only celebrity guest to pay homage to Lagerfeld’s Birman cat, Choupette – who now lives in Paris with her nanny and former Lagerfeld housekeeper, Francoise Cacote, following the designer’s death in 2019.
Unlike the Montero singer’s ambiguous nod to the famous feline, Jared Leto rocked up dressed in a life-size cat costume complete with removable head.
The Morbius star slinked down the carpet before eventually removing his furry white headpiece to reveal his identity.
This isn’t the first time Lil Nas X has pushed the fashion boundaries at the Met Gala.
In 2021, he walked the fashion event in an extravagant three-in-one look by Donatella Versace.
He first appeared on the famous steps of the The Metropolitan Museum of Art draped in a dramatic gold cape. He then shed the regal coat to reveal a golden, robot-like suit. Underneath the armour, the singer wore a bedazzled bodysuit with sequins.
“We wanted to start with, like, royalty, you know. Or like, a cloak … like we’re in our shell,” he told Vogue on the red carpet at the time. “And then we break out of it a little bit more … it’s kind of like me when I got into the industry. No one knew who I was.”
“It’s like I built this shield around myself … I came out, and this year, I feel like I REALLY came out. I think it represents this breakdown to THIS,” he said of his sparkly bodysuit.
