"There’s definitely a lot about that world that is not entirely real."

However, just 72 days later Kim filed for divorce, saying that she'd "hoped the marriage was forever", but "sometimes things don't work out as planned".

One month after the divorce announcement, the KUWTK spinoff Kourtney and Kim Take New York debuted. The season charted Kim and Kris's tumultuous first few months as a married couple and ended with Kim deciding she wanted a divorce.

Given the timing of the show, the length of the marriage and the amount of money Kim and Kris made from the wedding, many people were cynical about the relationship, and suggested it was a money-grabbing PR exercise — something Kim has always denied.

Court documents from the pair's divorce revealed that Kim earned $175,000 from People magazine for the exclusive engagement announcement and $1.1 million for the wedding photos. She also earned $90,000 for having her bachelorette party at the Las Vegas venue Tao, and was paid $1 million for broadcasting the wedding on E! Two days after the divorce announcement, however, Kris Jenner said that Kim didn't make a profit from any of the money she earned for the wedding, since it was all ploughed back into extravagant nuptials.

Last year, Kim revealed that she knew the marriage was doomed during their honeymoon, but has always maintained that she was in love with Kris when she accepted his proposal.

The rest of the Kardashian family weren't so keen on Kris — in fact, Kris Jenner asked Kim the night before the wedding: "Do you want out? You're not yourself." And, during the ceremony, Khloé was heard whispering to another guest: “I give it six fucking months.”

Kris Humphries, however, has always remained pretty silent on the subject. But now, eight years after the split, he's finally opened up about the marriage, revealing that it bothers him when people suggest it was "fake".

In an essay for the Players' Tribune, Kris wrote: "Look, I should have known what I was getting into. I was definitely naive about how much my life was going to change. But the one thing that really bothers me is whenever people say that my marriage was fake."

In an essay for the Players' Tribune, Kris wrote: "Look, I should have known what I was getting into. I was definitely naive about how much my life was going to change. But the one thing that really bothers me is whenever people say that my marriage was fake."

"There’s definitely a lot about that world that is not entirely real," he went on. "But our actual relationship was 100% real. When it was clear that it wasn't working ... what can I say? It sucked."

Kris then revealed that he felt "embarrassed" when the marriage ended, adding that it was "brutal" dealing with the split so publicly, and at one point he "didn't want to be Kris Humphries".

He said: "It's never easy to go through the embarrassment of something like that — with your friends, with your family. But when it plays out so publicly, in front of the world, it's a whole other level. It was brutal. I didn't want to be Kris Humphries. It's the craziest feeling in the world, not wanting to be yourself. And I didn’t even want to say anything to defend myself, because it felt like I couldn’t win. You can’t go up against the tabloids. You can’t go up against that machine."

And Kris also revealed that he was in "a dark place" for around a year after the split, and experienced "a lot of anxiety".

He said: "My whole life, I was a really confident, happy person. But nothing can prepare you for the feeling of walking down the street, or being anywhere, really ... and having people literally running up on you and trying to film you, trying to grab you. ... I'll be honest, I dealt with a lot of anxiety, especially in crowds. There was about a year where I was in a dark place. I didn't want to leave my home."
