6 year oldFans and friends are remembering groundbreaking DJ Avicii, born Tim Bergling, after the Swedish hitmaker died Friday at age 28.
While there are many unanswered questions about Avicii, like his exact cause of death, here's one question that we can answer for the EDM community: What does the stage name Avicii mean?
Avicii "means the lowest level of hell, it's just cool," Avicii told USA TODAY back in 2012. Indeed, in Buddhism, Avīci is a hell where dead who have sinned will, after enduring punishment, be reborn.
Avicii added the additional "i" to distinguish himself from a different Avici on MySpace.
Here's another question we can answer about Avicii: Why did he start making dance music?
The DJ told USA TODAY he was always interested in creating music, but had "never played an instrument (well)." When he learned that he could compose music on a computer, he took to mastering the art of song production. Several YouTube tutorials later, and the artist who also went by Tim Berg (for "more experimental, underground" music) was sharing original songs with friends, blogs and the electronic dance music site Beatport by his 18th birthday.
