8 year oldLast night Beyoncé won the Fashion Icon Award at the CFDA Fashion Awards in New York City.
Wearing a pin-striped Givenchy suit, she took the opportunity to deliver a powerful speech thanking her mother for the costumes she made for her in the past, because “high end labels didn’t really want to dress four black curvy country girls”.
Instead, she said, her mother made costumes which, she said, made her feel “like Khaleesi”. She also thanked her family for “showing me that having a presence is far more than the clothes you wear and your physical beauty,” and ended by thanking all designers, saying: “We have the opportunity to contribute to a society whe-re any girl can look at a billboard or magazine cover and see her own reflection. Soul has no color, no shape, no form.”
