Did someone order extra large? The Galaxy J Max lives up to its name with a 7-inch screen

Every once in a while, a phone shows up that is so large that it makes us question whether it is just a small tablet with phone functionality. Enter the Samsung Galaxy J Max, which makes us ask that question once more.

The headline feature of the Galaxy J Max that can probably be seen from miles away is its gargantuan 7-inch, 1,280 x 800p resolution display. Yes, the phone’s comically large display eliminates any dream of one-handed use you might have had with the Galaxy J Max, but you do get a large canvas to watch movies and play games on, even though that canvas is not of as high of a resolution as we might like.

The sheer size of the Galaxy J Max allows Samsung to include a 4,000mAh battery, but we are nevertheless a bit disappointed with the battery size. After all, phones like the Blu Energy XL and the ZTE Nubia N1 include 5,000mAh batteries, and they manage to do so while occupying a smaller footprint than the Galaxy J Max.

Elsewhere, a quad-core 1.5GHz Spreadtrum SC8830 chipset and 1.5GB RAM power the Galaxy J Max, with a 2-megapixel selfie shooter on the front and an 8MP main camera on the back. The phone comes with 16GB of native storage, though a MicroSD card slot is available to suit your storage needs.

Finally, and most unfortunately, the Galaxy J Max out of the box runs Android Lollipop, which has already become a bit long in the tooth. Samsung did not mention whether the phone will get an update to either Marshmallow or the upcoming Nougat, but do not be surprised if the answer to that is a resounding no.

Available by the end of July in India, the Galaxy J Max will go for 13,400 rupees for Indian residents, or at least $200 for importers.
