​What Perry was really like off camera ​

MasterChef contestant Reece Hignell has revealed what Katy Perry was really like when she filmed her guest spot on the cooking show.

Across five capital cities, 942,000 people tuned in last night to watch the episode which was filmed back in March.

Reece was arguably the most excited contestant when judge Jock Zonfrillo announced Katy Perry’s surprise appearance, and he told news.com.au this morning that they genuinely had no idea she was coming.

“The judges said to us the day before, ‘If you ever want to get into an immunity challenge, tomorrow is the one you want to be in,’” Reece said. “So we expected something good, but we thought it would be something along the lines of we’d all win immunity.

“But no, it was the best twist ever,” he said. “We lost our minds completely. It just didn’t seem like something that would ever happen.”

Viewers raved about Perry’s performance on the show, describing her presence as “completely chaotic”.

And what Perry was like on screen was exactly what she was like in person, Reece told news.com.au.

“She walked in and did not leave,” he said. “The whole time she was there, she was on. She didn’t leave the floor once.

“She spent the whole time walking around trolling us, but it was the most endearing thing,” the contestant said. “She was like, ‘Oh, is this cake going to cook in time?’ I was like, ‘Katy, it’s got half an hour to cook,’ and she said, ‘Hmm, cakes take longer than half an hour.’ I was like, ‘Leave me alone!’” Reece laughed.

Whereas Reece was beside himself with excitement over the pop star’s appearance, one contestant was totally unfazed.

“Did you see Reynold?” Reece said to news.com.au. “His reaction was like, ‘Meh’. I was like, ‘Reynold, it’s Katy Perry!’

“After the challenge when we were walking out and I said, ‘What are you doing? Reynold, why did you not react?’ He said he was too focused on making his dessert. I was surprised that he was unfazed but he’s just so focused.”

After filming the guest spot, Reece said the singer hung around for a quick chat with the contestants.

“She stuck around briefly afterwards and we did a few publicity photos,” he said.

“I had a chat to her for about five minutes. We were just chatting about the competition and she was in disbelief that we have to walk in every day and cook without a recipe.

“She was shocked that we had to come up with all of our ideas on the spot, so that was really cool that she gave us a bit of respect,” Reece said.
