Trump says US to withdraw from Iran nuclear deal

US President Donald Trump is expected to announce a decision on whether to remain in the six-nation nuclear deal with Iran. Follow FRANCE 24's televised coverage here on our video player or on our live blog below.
  • On his visit to Washington late last month, French President Emmanuel Macron encouraged Trump to remain in the Iran agreement while working with other nations to construct “a more comprehensive deal".
  • Iran has warned of "severe consequences" if the White House withdraws from the agreement – known formally as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action or JCPOA – and said it would also leave the deal if the US pulls out. However, Iranian President Hassan Rohani suggested on Monday that Iran might remain in the accord with the other five signatories: Britain, France, Germany, China and Russia.
  • Britain, France and Germany have jointly reaffirmed their belief that the nuclear deal remains the best way of preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, with French Defence Minister Florence Parly calling the agreement a force for “peace and stabilisation” in an otherwise volatile region. Russia and China have also pledged their "unwavering support" for the JCPOA.
