The Department of Homeland Security will not renew the Temporary Protected Status designation that has allowed the Salvadorans to remain in the United States since at least 2001, when their country was struck by a pair of devastating earthquakes, according to multiple people with knowledge of the plan.

The approval of the bill in the House and Senate came over the strenuous objections of Democrats, who have accused Republicans of giving a gift to corporations and the wealthy and driving up the federal debt in the process.

On the heels of the House passing the Republican tax overhaul bill Tuesday afternoon on a party-line vote, the Senate followed suit early Wednesday morning, passing it with Republican votes only.

President Trump praised House and Senate negotiators in a lunch meeting at the White House. “We’re very close to getting it done, we’re very close to voting,” Mr. Trump said, of the tax bill. He added later “This is the biggest thing that we’ve worked on.”
