The Boston Celtics made NBA history on Friday night.

Payton Pritchard hit a three-pointer in the second quarter of Boston's matchup with the Phoenix Suns, representing the Celtics' 1,364th triple of the season.

That set a new single-season three-point record, surpassing the mark set by the 2022-23 Golden State Warriors.

Boston previously came close to breaking the record during its 2023-24 campaign, connecting on 1,351 attempts from behind the arc.

The 2018-19 Houston Rockets sit at No. 4 on the all-time list with 1,323 threes in a single season, while the 2022-23 Celtics round out the top five with a total of 1,315 long-range makes.

All three of Boston's teams that ranked within the top five have been coached by Joe Mazzulla.

The Celtics have utilized high-volume three-point shooting more than almost any other team throughout Mazzulla's tenure, especially as they attempt to defend their 2024 championship.

Boston leads the NBA, averaging 48.4 three-point attempts on a nightly basis this season. The difference in attempts per game between the Celtics and the No. 2-ranked Warriors (5.9) is the same as the distance between Golden State and the Milwaukee Bucks, who rank No. 18 in threes attempted each night.

All five of Boston's starters are averaging at least five threes attempted per game during its 2024-25 campaign, while Pritchard and forward Sam Hauser combine to launch 13.4 triples per game off the bench.

The strategy has worked for Mazzulla, as the Celtics' 119.6 offensive rating ranks No. 2 in the league this year (via NBA.com).

Boston should be able to comfortably build upon its new record with five games remaining in the regular season.
