8 year oldThe toddler, who has not been identified, fired the gun about 11am Monday (1am Tuesday AEST) at a home in Quakertown, Pennsylvania.
He was rushed to hospital, but died from his injuries, according to Pennsylvania State Police.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including whether anyone was home at the time, how the child got the weapon and who owned the weapon.
Authorities say the shooting appears accidental.
