Donald Trump gave a surprising live reaction to news of Taylor Swift’s engagement to footballer Travis Kelce.
The US President, who hasn’t been shy about his opinion of the pop star, was asked to weigh in on Swift’s engagement to the NFL star during a high-profile meeting with members of his Cabinet in Washington on Tuesday (Wednesday AEST).
“I would love to ask you a serious question, but I have to tell you, the biggest pop culture news of the year broke while we were in this Cabinet meeting,” a reporter asked Mr Trump.
“Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift are engaged. And the world wants your reaction, sir.”

Responding to the news, the 79-year-old wished the Kansas City Chiefs tight end luck, before complimenting the Shake It Off singer.
“Well, I wish him a lot of luck,” Mr Trump said. “I think he’s a great player. I think he’s a great guy.”
“And I think that she’s a terrific person,” he continued. “So I wish them a lot of luck.”
The superstar couple, who have been dating since 2023, announced their engagement on social media on Wednesday.
“Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married,” the caption to the joint post shared to Swift’s and Kelce’s Instagram accounts read.
The post was accompanied by several images of Swift, dressed in a blue Polo Ralph Lauren dress, and Kelce, dressed in a Ralph Lauren navy cableknit sweater, in a wooded glade, including one photo with the footballer down on one knee.
The President’s comments on the pair’s engagement has come at a surprise given his repeated criticism of Swift over the years.
Mr Trump made his feelings known after the singer announced her endorsement of then-Vice President Kamala Harris during last year’s election.
“I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!” the Republican wrote on Truth Social in September.
He took aim at the 35-year-old again earlier this year after she was loudly booed at the Super Bowl 2025 match-up between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles.
“The only one that had a tougher night than the Kansas City Chiefs was Taylor Swift,” the president wrote on Truth Social in February.
“She got BOOED out of the Stadium. MAGA is very unforgiving!”
Months later, he took another swipe at the 14-time Grammy winner – this time over her appearance.
“Has anyone noticed that, since I said ‘I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT,’ she’s no longer ‘HOT?’” he claimed on Truth Social in May.
It’s believed Swift is planning to use her new album – which she announced earlier this month – to silence critics.
Insiders have claimed the album – The Life of A Showgirl – could be one of her most personal yet, taking aim at her right-wing critics and addressing some of the “darkest chapters” in her life.
Some fans have speculated one of the new tracks ‘CANCELLED!’ could make reference to Mr Trump or Swift’s relationship with actor Blake Lively following her messy lawsuit with her former co-star Justin Baldoni.
The new album will be released on October 3, 2025.
