Days after she was seen in tears, tennis superstar Naomi Osaka has shared devastating news about her personal life.
Naomi Osaka has split from her long-time partner.
The tennis champ announced on Tuesday that she and rapper Cordae “are no longer in a relationship”.
The news that one of the most celebrated couples in the sport are no longer an item shattered many fans across the tennis world.
Osaka shared the news via a post on her Instagram stories where she said she does not regret the relationship.
“No bad blood at all, he’s a great person and an awesome dad,” Osaka wrote about Cordae — whose full name is Cordae Amari Dunston.
“Honestly really glad our paths crossed because my daughter is my biggest blessing and I was able to grow a lot from our experiences together.”
She finished the post with a red heart emoji.
The adorable couple went public with their romance in April, 2019.
They celebrated the birth of daughter Shai, in July, 2023.
Months after the birth of their baby, rumours of a break-up began swirling when they wiped each other from their social media pages. The pair also stopped following each other on social media at the time.
This time the split is official.
Osaka’s blunt post came after the four-time grand slam champion posted cryptic messages on social media.
The Japanese superstar, who grew up in the United States, left fans scratching their heads with notes about her personal life behind the scenes.
“I’ve come to the conclusion that what’s meant for me is meant for me and maybe certain situations occur to train my mind for what’s to come,” she wrote on Sunday.
“Maybe there’s bigger and better things on my path and I just have to continue the journey to encounter them.
“That being said this is about to be a great year.”
She earlier thanked those close to her for their support during a tough start to the year.
She shared a note on Monday that said: “All jokes aside, I do really want to thank my team and everyone else close to me for having my back and keeping me sane (though that’s debatable LOL). I’m truly very grateful.
Her news comes just days after she was spotted in tears at the Auckland Classic when she was forced to quit the tournament because of an injury.
Osaka reached the final of the New Zealand event, but she stopped playing because of an injury after taking the opening set on Sunday.
It has been a rollercoaster on and off the court.
Osaka returned to the WTA Tour at last year’s Australian Open after about 15 months off.
She has climbed back up to 57th in the world rankings.
After being injured in Auckland, her participation at Melbourne Park this month is uncertain.
Osaka’s sudden withdrawal from the Australian Open warm-up event came as a shock after playing with no apparent problem in the 35-minute opening set, unleashing some powerful groundstrokes to break her opponent in the third and fifth games.
At the changeover, the 27-year-old stood and performed a series of stretches during a medical time out.
After consulting with the trainer she shook the hand of Tauson, who picked up a third career title and her first since 2021.
Osaka didn’t divulge details of what forced her withdrawal in a short courtside interview.
However, in a statement, the WTA said she retired “due to an abdominal injury”.
“I just want to thank everyone for welcoming me to such a beautiful city and I had a lot of fun playing here and I’m really sorry about how it ended,” Osaka said.
“I hope you did enjoy the tennis that we did play and I’m just really grateful to be here.”
