1 year oldHollywood actor Treat Williams has died at the age of 71 after being involved in a motorcycle accident.
Williams’ longtime agent Barry McPherson confirmed his death to People, telling the outlet: “He was killed this afternoon. He was making a left or a right [and] a car cut him off.”
The accident occurred near Dorset in Vermont, and Williams was airlifted to hospital in New York.
Williams’ family have now released a statement, issued to Deadline, which reads:
“It is with great sadness that we report that our beloved Treat Williams has passed away tonight in Dorset, Vermont after a fatal motorcycle accident. As you can imagine, we are shocked and greatly bereaved at this time.
“Treat was full of love for his family, for his life and for his craft, and was truly at the top of his game in all of it. It is all so shocking right now, but please know that Treat was dearly and deeply loved and respected by his family and everyone who knew him. We are beyond devastated and ask that you respect our privacy as we deal with our grief. To all his fans, please know that Treat appreciated all of you and please continue to keep him in your hearts and prayers.”Williams was a prolific film, television and stage actor who had been in the business for more than 50 years, earning his first of three Golden Globe nominations in 1979 for his starring role in the big screen adaptation of the musical Hair. Further Golden Globe acting nominations followed for the 1981 film Prince of the City and the 1984 TV movie A Streetcar Named Desire.
“I’m just devastated. He was the nicest guy. He was so talented,” his agent told People. “He was an actor’s actor. Filmmakers loved him.” He described his client as “the heart of Hollywood since the late 1970s.”
Williams is survived by his wife of 35 years, Pam Van Sant, and their two children, Gille and Ellie.
