Ben Affleck’s “erratic behaviour” was reportedly a major factor in his divorce from Jennifer Lopez, according to a report by People published Saturday.
A source told the outlet the Argo star’s often unpredictable and “giant mood swings” ultimately divided him and the singer, leading her to file for divorce last week after two years of marriage, reports Page Six.
“You could see the erratic behaviour, the giant mood swings,” the source told People, noting that his temperament would sometimes swing from “being incredibly happy and warm — the best light that emanated from him” — to “the deepest, darkest behaviour.”
“The truth is there was a great deal of love but also unfortunately what became clear were Ben’s erratic mood swings that he couldn’t hide from the press, as much as he tried to,” the source continued.
The insider went on to speculate that Affleck was “signalling a message to the press.”
Around the time of their separation date, which Lopez specified in her filing as April 26, the former couple was allegedly “trying to work” through their issues. However, it was to no avail. The On the Floor singer officially filed for divorce on August 20 — the second anniversary of their Georgia wedding ceremony.
“They were trying to work through it, but when the mood swings and the big highs and big lows informed a toxicity that was pervasive, no one can help you — you have to help yourself,” the source claimed.
“But I would not be so bold to say there isn’t love — of course there is.”
The insider finished, “The world was rooting for them, but who he said he was and who he turned out to be were two different people.”
Reps for Affleck and Lopez did not immediately respond to Page Six’s requests for comment.
Earlier on Saturday, a Page Six source also detailed Affleck’s “darkness,” saying Lopez was duped into the whirlwind romance before she truly learned who she married.
“She truly believed this was the greatest love story she’d ever known and she was finally getting her chance at the fairy tale,” said one Hollywood source who knows the couple. “She just really didn’t stop to consider who the actual man was [in] the fairy tale.”
The source also alleged that the “big love Jennifer believes in” is “not in [Ben’s] DNA.”
“Ben has a darkness to him that no other person can fix. [His ex-wife] Jen Garner couldn’t fix it, all the success in the world couldn’t fix it.”
