Elon Musk, Grimes want to name their newborn son X Æ A-12, but California isn't having it

The state of California is indicating the unusual name,  X Æ A-12, for the newborn child of Tesla and SpaceX chief Elon Musk and singer Grimes does not jibe with state health codes. The duo announced the name on Twitter following the baby boy's birth on May 4.

"A name like 'X Æ A-12' would not be allowed," Matt Conens, from the Office of Public Affairs of the California Department of Public Health, wrote in an email to USA TODAY. "Vital records must be completed with the 26 alphabetical characters of the English language and appropriate punctuation such as hyphens, apostrophes, periods, and commas."

The diacritical marks are also not acceptable for vital records (just like numerals, pictographs or ideograms).

After Musk announced the birth of the child Monday, Grimes tweeted a full breakdown of the name late Tuesday:

"•X, the unknown variable

•Æ, my elven spelling of Ai (love &/or Artificial intelligence)

•A-12 = precursor to SR-17 (our favorite aircraft). No weapons, no defenses, just speed. Great in battle, but non-violent

+ (A=Archangel, my favorite song) (metal rat)"

However, Grimes apparently made a mistake in her explanatory post, which Musk corrected.

"SR-71, but yes," he wrote in response.

Musk owns residences across California, including in Bel Air, Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area.

USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for Grimes and Musk on the next steps.

No big rush on coming up with a new, legally acceptable name for California. Conens wrote that the child’s birth certificate may be prepared with a single dash in the first, middle and last name fields. The parents may amend the record to add a name later with either an amendment or supplemental name report.
