WHEN Google was capturing images for its Maps feature, it discovered something very sinister looking hiding in a field.

IT’S one of the spookiest sightings ever made on Google Maps.

A field of scarecrows has been spotted in a field in Finland, leaving observers baffled about why they are there, reports The Sun.

At first glance, it looks as if the field is filled with people — or even zombies.

But if you zoom in for closer inspection, it becomes clear that the figures are actually scarecrows.

There’s a logical explanation for the presence of the straw men and women.

They are part of an art installation called The Silent People, which can be found in the Suomussalmi region of Finland.

Here’s what TripAdvisor has to say about the creepy artwork: “The crowd of almost a thousand figures that make up the Silent People suddenly emerges before the passing motorist like some great stroke of magic.

“In the morning with light behind them, this motionless army appears morose, even menacing.

“However, as the day progresses their countenance brightens up and with the setting of the sun they present a distinctly jolly and colourful picture. When the wind blows their straw hair and clothes begin to flap rhythmically, it is as if they had suddenly sprung into life.”

The Silent People was made by the artist Reijo Kela and features almost 1,000 scarecrows.

They have stood in the field ever since the autumn of 1994, when they were first installed.

Earlier this year a woman couldn’t believe her eyes after spotting her mum on Google Street View — 18 months after she died.

Denise Underhill, who moved to Florida from Tamworth, near Birmingham in the UK, said she had an urge to check on her old home — and was given the shock of a lifetime when she realised her mother was pictured watering the garden outside her old home.

The daughter told the Tamworth Herald: “As I went about my housework, I somehow instantaneously had the impulse to call my mother but realising that it was completely out of the question.

“I decided to Google Earth my mother’s home to see how it looked, considering, since she had passed away in 2015 and the property had been sold.”

But the woman was given the shock of a lifetime when she saw her mother had been captured in the street view.

She said: “At the foot of the driveway was my mother. She was watering the garden, just as she always did. I think someone wanted me to see this.”
