Faulty locks, stolen blankets and a hungry jail employee: A timeline of how 10 inmates used skill and luck to escape

CNN — One inmate was behind bars for murdering two men. Another was charged with domestic abuse involving strangulation. A third was accused of attacking a corrections officer.

But when 10 inmates broke out of the Orleans Justice Center on Friday, they didn’t assault any officers. The escape was – in their own words – “To Easy LoL.”

Here’s a visual timeline of how the inmates used strategic planning, bad infrastructure and sheer luck to escape a jail in the heart of New Orleans:

“There’s just one after another circumstances here that indicates they had significant assistance from people working in the facility,” McCabe said.

“And they probably also benefited from just very lax security policies likely caused by underfunding and understaffing. But nevertheless, this is what that leads to. And if a facility’s not secure, bad guys get away.”
