Justices say outside groups have no right to contest federal layoffs
WASHINGTON—The Supreme Court on Tuesday lifted a lower court order that blocked the Trump administration from firing some 16,000 federal employees, saying that environmental groups and other outside organizations harmed by the reduction in public services lack legal standing to challenge the layoffs.
The brief order was unsigned, as is typical when the court acts on emergency requests. Two liberal justices, Sonia Sotomayor and Ketanji Brown Jackson, said they voted to deny the Trump administration’s request.
At issue was an injunction issued by Judge William Alsup of the U.S. District Court in San Francisco requiring reinstatement of probationary employees at several agencies the Trump administration sought to dismiss.
