This article is more than
1 year oldThere was frenzied speculation Tom Cruise could get a best actor nod at the Oscar nominations announced today in Hollywood. But it wasn’t to be.
The wildly successful Top Gun: Maverick, which was the highest grossing film of his entire career and the second biggest movie of last year, was not enough to push Cruise over the line to his third best actor nomination.
Although he could still get an Oscar as he is one of the producers of Top Gun: Maverick which is up for best picture. Indeed, overall, the Top Gun sequel fared well picking up six noms.
Brendan Fraser, in his controversial role as an obese teacher in The Whale, will battle it out for best actor with Austin Butler from Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis and Love Actually’s Bill Nighy who stars as a terimally ill beureuacrat in teh critially acclaimed Living.
Aussie nomination – and a snub
Australian directorial royalty Luhrmann, of Moulin Rouge fame, will be in two minds after the nominations. His Elvis biopic received eight nominations – the fourth highest overall – but he failed to get the nod for best director.
There’s better news for Cate Blanchett. Her portrayal of fictionalised composer Lydia
Tár in Tár sees her up for best actress. But it will be a tough category with Michelle Yeoh from Everything Everywhere All At Once the one to beat.
Indeed, Everything Everywhere All At Once was the most nominated film and is in 11 categories, followed by German World War II anti-war film All Quiet on the Western Front and Irish juggernaut The Banshees of Inisherin with nine noms apiece.
Worst film could get an Oscar
Officially, it’s one of the worst films of the entire year – yet it could get an Oscar.
Marilyn Monroe biopic Blonde has been panned and received eight nominations for the Razzies – the alternative Oscars for worst motion pictures.
However, Ana de Armas, who plays Monroe in Blonde, was nominated for best actress. To be that bad and also Oscar worthy is a remarkable feat for a film.
The nominations for the 2023 Oscars were announced in Hollywood on Tuesday morning, US time.
British actor and Oscar winner Riz Ahmed and Alison Williams, who is starring in creepy flick M3GAN, announced the nominations at an eye-wateringly early 5.30am local time from the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre in Los Angeles.
The Oscars will be held on March 12 and hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.
