It’s played host to some of the most controversial celebrity moments of all time, and music’s night of nights is back for another year of mayhem.
The MTV Video Music Awards rolled out the red carpet at New York’s UBS Arena Monday, with Lady Gaga (who famously wore a meat dress at the VMAs back in 2010) leading the nominations with 12. She’s followed closely by Bruno Mars, who has 11 nods - many of them for the same song, their smash hit duet Die With A Smile.
Unfortunately for Taylor Swift fans, the newly-engaged pop star is not expected to attend despite being nominated for the top prize, Artist of the Year, and after she sensationally dethroned Beyonce at the 2024 awards as the most awarded artist in MTV VMAs history.
Despite her no-show, there’s ample star power elsewhere with Beyonce, The Weeknd, Sabrina Carpenter and Ariana Grande all up for trophies at the ceremony (we’re live blogging all the action here.)
But before the broadcast kicked off on Paramount+, it was all about the fashion from the red carpet.
Singer Doja Cat brought the bizarre straight up, posing for photographers in her daring minidress before proceeding to eat her lipstick.
Pop megastar of the moment Sabrina Carpenter was a shoo-in for best dressed in a breathtaking red lace gown.
Meanwhile, Swedish singer Zara Larsson stepped out in a totally see-through, mermaid-inspired mini dress with matching underwear.
Last year’s VMAs was all about Swift, who took home the top award of the night, Artist of the Year.
She also won Video of the Year for Post Malone collaboration Fortnight, where she gave her first ever public shout-out to then “boyfriend” Travis Kelce, whom she’s now set to marry.
No doubt after a break from the award show circuit this year, the megastar will return with a bang come 2026.
Her 12th album The Life of a Showgirl is set to drop on October 3.

In the video, shared via TikTok, Cardi teased her new album while twerking without pants on.
