'Sinners' leads the nominees with a record-breaking 16 mentions.

Sinners leads the 2026 Oscar nominations with a record-breaking 16 noms, including best picture, best director and best original screenplay.

One Battle After Another also is a top nominee, with 13, followed by Frankenstein, Marty Supreme and Sentimental Value with nine apiece.

Danielle Brooks and Lewis Pullman announced this year’s nominees in 24 categories, including the new casting award, in a live presentation from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater

This year, the Oscars has added a new category, the first since best animated feature was introduced in 2002, recognizing best casting. A shortlist of 10 films was released, along with Oscar shortlists in a number of other categories, last month, with the final nominees determined by members of the casting directors branch from a “bake-off” presentation of the shortlisted contenders. Hamnet, Marty Supreme, One Battle After Another, The Secret Agent and Sinners landed noms in that category.

The Academy also made it harder for members to vote in categories in which they have not watched all of the nominees, tracking viewing via the members-only Academy Screening Room app, and, for films seen elsewhere, like at screenings and film festivals, members had to fill out a form noting when and where they watched a film.

The 2026 Oscars, hosted by Conan O’Brien for the second year in a row, are set to air live on ABC and Hulu from the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday, March 15, starting at 4 p.m. PT.

Last year’s Academy Award for best picture went to Anora, just one of five awards won by the Sean Baker film, including best director (Baker) and best actress (Mikey Madison). Best actor went to Adrien Brody (The Brutalist), with Zoe Saldaña winning best supporting actress for Emilia Pérez and Kieran Culkin winning best supporting actor for A Real Pain.
