4 year oldKim Kardashian-West is 40 and there has not been a more historic milestone since the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012.
The reality TV star celebrated 40 laps around the sun yesterday and, given almost half of her life has been filmed, E! aired a Keeping Up With The Kardashians special in which Kim and her siblings reminisced on her most cringe moment ever.
Fans who have watched the show for years will enjoy the aggressive reminder that Kim – often criticised for having no talent – recorded a pop single titled Jam (Turn It Up) in 2011.
Reflecting on it during the special, Kim said: “Oh my god, I can’t. I can’t even hear my voice. The things I’ve done are so embarrassing.”
So let’s dredge up all the details of this classic pop tune.
For starters, the opening lyrics really hook you in:
O-o-oh
O-o-oh
O-o-oh
O-o-oh
Turn me on turn me up
Turn me turn me turn me up! Yeah, yeah, yeah!
At the time, Kim was approached by record producer The-Dream while she was living in New York with sister Kourtney opening their third DASH clothing store.
They were also filming their series spin-off, Kourtney and Kim Take New York. Side note: This is also the season where Kim had a wild rendezvous with an Australian bodyguard named Shengo. Good times.
Kim was reluctant at first because she knew she couldn’t sing, however she sought advice from her then-friend, future husband Kanye West who encouraged her to have a crack.
Sound advice.

Kim unveiled the song on On Air with Ryan Seacrest in March 2011 and announced half of the proceeds would go to a cancer foundation. A lovely sentiment, but it didn’t in the slightest bit thwart the critics.
One review from The Daily News’ Jim Farber said the song was “dead-brained piece of generic dance music, without a single distinguishing feature”.
Kim has since declared recording the song was one of her biggest regrets.
“It’s definitely a memory and it was a fun experience. We gave the proceeds to a cancer organisation,” Kardashian told Watch What Happens Live host Andy Cohen after he played the song during a 2014 interview.
“But if there’s one thing in life that I wish I didn’t do … I don’t like it when people kind of dabble into things they shouldn’t be. And that I don’t think I should have. Like, what gave me the right to think I could be a singer? Like, I don’t have a good voice.”
