John Cena confirms plans to retire from the WWE

John Cena isn’t wrestling with his decision to throw in the towel in the wrestling ring, as the WWEsuperstar has confirmed new details about his plans to retire.

“That’s not a maybe, that time is gonna come and it’s gonna come soon,” Cena said during an interview with Entertainment Tonight.

The West Newbury, Mass. native, who made his WWE debut in 2002, is widely considered one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time. But his biological clock is factoring in on his decision to walk away from the profession that made him a household name.

“I’m gonna be 47 this year,” Cena shared. “Inside I feel great, but I know what it takes to be a WWE performer night in and night out and I don’t ever wanna just go out there and do it to do it. I wanna have the passion — the same passion as the fanbase — and I wanna give them exactly what they give me. The miles on the speedometer say, ‘Hey, that’s gotta be done before 50.'”

Outside the ring, Cena has had a flourishing acting career with roles in movies such as “Trainwreck,” “F9” and “Suicide Squad.” He’s currently promoting his new action film, “Argylle,” set to be released Feb. 2.

But the record-holding 16-time world champ, who turns 47 on April 23, says he’s on his own timeline and won’t rule out the occasional return to wrestling, much like predecessor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has done after achieving his own Hollywood stardom.

“As long as I can perform, I don’t intend to miss a year,” he said.
