8 year oldTMZ reports the 41-year-old Hollywood star filed legal documents on Monday, citing irreconcilable differences.
But sources told the entertainment website Jolie ended their two-year marriage because she was upset at how Pitt, 52, was raising their children.
“She was extremely upset with his methods,” sources said.
Insiders also said Jolie became “fed up” with the Inglourious Basterds actor’s weed and booze consumption, mixed with his “anger problems”, that could be “dangerous” for the children.
The couple, who have been together for 12 years, officially separated on September 15.
Jolie, who is being represented by celebrity divorce lawyer Laura Wasser, is seeking custody of their children but will allow Pitt to have visitation rights. She is not seeking spousal support.
Robert Offer, a lawyer for Jolie, said the Oscar-winning actress filed for the dissolution of the marriage “for the health of the family.”
The Sun reports the power couple have been living separate lives for months following a string of fights over their children.
“Angelina is very unhappy with the marriage and wants out with Brad,” a source close to Pitt said.
“There have been rumours around the status of the relationship for years, but they are now very much in turmoil and it is hard to see a way out.
“There have been a constant string of arguments about their future and their children. They ended up completely disagreeing over how to raise the kids.”
The warring couple made their last official public appearance together in November last year at the premiere of their movie By The Sea. The flick, filmed in Malta, was about an unhappy couple.

Sources told TMZ there was no “third person” behind the split, saying Jolie’s decision was based entirely on their family life.
The pair has been dogged by split rumours for several months, with Pitt romantically linked to French actress Marion Cotillard.
Star magazine reported Pitt got close to Cotillard, 40, while filming Allied in England.
“There is totally something going on between [Brad and Marion],” an insider said. “They had insane chemistry right from the start, and many crew members believe they’ve been acting on it in private.”
The insider also said the duo had “affectionate nicknames” for each other, and Cotillard “lights up whenever Brad is around.”
In Touch magazine recently reported Pitt refused to spend the last days of a summer holiday with his family, instead going to Croatia.
“As Brad headed out the door, Angelina was in tears, truly feeling she’d lost Brad once and for all. The marriage is broken and Brad and Angelina’s $400 million divorce is underway,” In Touch reported, via Hollywood Gossip.
The Sun reports Pitt spent the first part of this month in Croatia, negotiating a billion-dollar deal to build a new luxury resort in the coastal town of Zablace.
The couple, dubbed “Brangelina”, wed in August 2014 after striking up a romance on the set of Mr & Mrs Smith, around the same time as Pitt’s divorce from Friendsactress Jennifer Aniston.
Many blamed Jolie for Pitt’s split from Aniston in 2005.
Pitt and Jolie married privately in the French hamlet of Correns in Provence with their children serving as ring bearers and throwing flower petals. They announced the ceremony days later.
Pitt and Jolie have six children together: Maddox, 14, Pax, 12, and Zahara, 11, Shiloh, 10, and eight-year-old twins Vivienne and Knox.
This was the second marriage for Pitt (previously married to Aniston) and the third for Jolie, who was previously married to Billy Bob Thornton and Jonny Lee Miller.
Though their initial romance sparked an avalanche of interest, Jolie and Pitt settled into their own unique kind of domesticity.
The pair adopted children from Cambodia, Vietnam and Ethiopia. And they sought to direct the glare of their celebrity toward other causes. Jolie, a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations, became an outspoken voice for refugees and various causes in Africa, as well as for breast cancer treatment after undergoing a double mastectomy.
Jolie also launched herself as a film director. Last year, the couple starred together in her By the Sea, playing a glamorous couple vacationing together in France while their marriage was on the rocks.
At the time, Jolie admitted that filming that movie was “hard” and left the couple “really worried” about their marriage.
“Brad and I have our issues, but if the characters were even remotely close to our problems we couldn’t have made the film,” she said.
“To be clear: we have fights and problems like any other couple. We have days when we drive each other absolutely mad and want space, but the problems in the movie aren’t our specific problems.”
