Haiti’s political storm intensifies: ‘Each faction is trying to destroy its rivals’

He presented himself as a unifying figure who would heal a nation in grief after the assassination of its president. But just days after signing a deal to lead a transitional government, Haiti’s acting prime minister was this week accused of involvement in the killing.

The drama intensified on Tuesday when Haiti’s chief prosecutor asked a judge to indict interim leader Ariel Henry, saying phone records showed Henry had spoken twice with a leading suspect in the murder, just hours after President Jovenel Moïse was shot dead by a hit squad in a bedroom of his residence in July. 

Henry responded by firing the prosecutor, Bed-Ford Claude, and the justice minister, with his office describing the accusation as “baseless innuendo” and adding that he had received “innumerable calls of all kinds” that night from people worried for his safety.
