As The Project reacted to shock election result, co-host Waleed Aly shared his theory behind Kamala Harris’ unprecedented loss.
Waleed Aly has reacted to the news that Donald Trump will become the 47th President of the United States.
Aly, who on Tuesday predicted Kamala Harris would become the victor, shared his theory on Wednesday’s episode of The Project about her shocking loss while chatting with US political commentator Steve Clemons.
“This is as bad a loss as they could probably have conceived,” said Aly.
“When you lose like this, everything was wrong,” replied Clemons.
“Kamala was vice president of the United States, but was not well known to the public. Joe Biden stepped out too late. She didn’t tend to wing it very well when asked about her economic plan. The nuts and bolts of policy,” he explained.
“Donald Trump wasn’t very good at that either, but no one expected that from him. These things stacked up and she felt like part of the Biden bland package.”
“Trumps message was very direct. Jobs, immigration, crime,” said Aly. “The Democrats’ message tended to be more theoretical, like democracy.”
“I think it was one of the downfalls of Joe Biden,” said Clemons. “I’m going to say something controversial here though, I think Biden would have done better in the battleground states. People cared about the price of eggs, butter and toast.”
Going on to speak about the speed of the result, Aly shared: “Some of the really key states were meant to take ages. For the whole thing to be done just tells you how overwhelming the result is. And we should point out that the Republicans have taken the lot. The House, the Senate, Congress, it’s an extraordinary level of power that they will enjoy.”While Trump made a victory speech, the VP announced this afternoon that she would not be addressing her supporters tonight.
Trump looks set to win the popular vote, the first time for a Republican since George W Bush in 2004.
In his speech, Trump vowed to fight hard for a “golden age of America”.
“Every single day I will be fighting for you, with every breath in my body,” he said.
“I will not rest until we have delivered the strong, safe and prosperous America that our children deserve and that you deserve. We also have won the popular vote, which is great.” “Winning the popular vote is very nice.”
