Donald Trump Jr. ditches Secret Service protections

The 39-year-old Trump Organization executive decided to forgo being trailed by the cash-strapped agency last week in an attempt to find more privacy, the New York Times reported Monday, citing a senior member of Trump's administration.

CNN's Jim Acosta also reported Monday that Kellyanne Conway is refusing her federal protections. The White House adviser was one of the few people outside of Trump’s family with a detail.

The Secret Service declined to confirm which of Trump’s family is “currently receiving Secret Service protection,” according to the Times.

Trump Jr.’s decision to cease Secret Service protections comes as the federal law enforcement agency finds itself running short on funds. It told Congress in August that 1,000 of its special agents will have exhausted their budget cap on overtime and salaries by September’s end if they continue to keep protecting the President’s large brood.

Secret Service agents have accompanied the Trump sons, Donald and Eric, overseas to promote Trump-branded properties. So far in 2017, Eric Trump has ventured to the UK, Uruguay and the Dominican Republic. Both brothers have traveled to Dubai and Vancouver, B.C., with their security detail.

Trump’s other children and the Trump Organization headquarters in Manhattan continue to remain under the Secret Service’s watch.

The Secret Service automatically protects the commander-in-chief and their families, even after their White House tenure ends. Former President Richard Nixon declined to continue his protections after leaving the White House in 1974, opting for privately-funded security.
