Mariah Carey is the queen of Christmas, and it turns out she’s also the queen of making a truck load of money. Her holiday classic All I Want for Christmas Is You is the gift that keeps on giving for its writers, which include Carey, and record label. In 2022, Carey’s version of her song generated 2.181 million song consumption units in the United States, but lets put that into context. In total, 51,000 were from track downloads, 229.7 million came from on-demand audio streams, 123.5 million came from video on-demand streams and 29.1 million from programmed streams. Combined, that generated $1.8 million ($2.64 Aus) in the United States for Carey and her label, Sony Music, according to Billboard. However, America only accounted for 59.2 per cent of download sales and 30.6 per cent of on-demand streaming, so when you look at the song globally and take into account a total of 85,000 song downloads and 1.15 billion streams, Billboard estimates that in 2022 the Carey brought in more than $5.3 million ($7.76 Aus), while its publishing royalties generated another $3.2 million ($4.68 Aus). |
Meanwhile, she might be rich, but she’s still unlucky in love like the rest of us. Carey and her longtime boyfriend, Bryan Tanaka, have called it quits because he wanted children, a source told Page Six. “He wants to have a family. That’s not where she is at,” says the source. Carey shares 12-year-old twins Moroccan and Monroe with her ex-husband Nick Cannon. Tanaka, on the other hand, does not have children of his own. The Fantasy singer and backup dancer were together for seven years. Eyebrows were raised this week when the Queen of Christmas went on her annual solo trip to Aspen, Colorado. |
Tanaka was also missing from her “Merry Christmas One and All!” tour that started in November at the Yaamava Resort & Casino in California. Tanaka worked as a dancer with Carey starting in 2006 and they started dating in 2016. “He wants to start having his own life,” another source said. Carey further fuelled speculation that the relationship was over when she told People earlier this month that she had a tough year. “I’ve been looking forward to this Christmas for, like, the whole year. Since last year — because last year wasn’t the greatest,” the songstress said. “I’m thankful for them all, but it wasn’t my most fun version of Christmas ever.” |
