5 year oldHollywood’s brightest stars have descended on the Dolby Theater in LA, where the 2019 Oscars is now underway.
A Star Is Born, Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, The Favourite, Green Book, Roma and Vice are among the favourites to take home statues at today’s ceremony — but before they started getting announced, all eyes were on the red carpet.

One of the first jaw-dropping appearances this year was from Green Book actress Linda Cardellini, whose dress was an uncomfortable blend of two of the riskiest style trends available: the “mullet” hemline and hot pink tulle ruffles.
Oh, and she threw in a “2000 Grammys J-Lo”-inspired neckline for good measure, giving the overwhelming overall effect of someone who is literally being drowned in their own bad fashion choice.
People weren’t exactly loving it on Twitter — but this user probably summed it up best:
Literally who brought this atrocity into our world? This is SO bad. #Oscars #ERedCarpet #LindaCardellini pic.twitter.com/8NeOojMa8q

And pink ruffles seem to be contagious this year.
Country singer Kacey Musgraves caught a case of the Cardellinis and turned up as literal fairy floss — but hers kind of worked:
Ocean’s 8 star Sarah Paulson rarely gets it wrong in the style stakes — which makes this unflattering pink disaster all the more jarring:
Best Actress nominee Lady Gaga has played it pretty safe throughout the awards season so far, but has obviously decided to go for broke for the last big hurrah.
I stared at this dress for minutes on end and simply couldn’t work out the point of it — but it appears that the A Star Is Born actress decided to enhance her waist with some unbelievably angular inserts, proving that it is not, in fact, hip to be square.
Meanwhile, even Best Supporting Actress nominee Rachel Weisz (The Favourite) didn’t look sure about her decision to don a bizarre cropped red rain coat.
Her co-star Emma Stone (also nominated in the same category) angered some bees by wearing their honeycomb home as a gown.
At the other end of the scale, their fellow Best Supporting Actress nominee, Marina de Tavira — who scored a nod for her role in Roma — may not have won the Oscar, but she’s number one in our eyes for this breathtaking red carpet offering.
(Ms. Cardellini, take note: this is how you do tulle ruffles).
Also nominated for Best Supporting Actress is If Beale Street Could Talk actress Regina King, who looked heavenly in a classic white gown — with a bit of an Angelina Jolie leg pop.
But pink is clearly the major trend of this year’s awards show.
One of this year’s presenters, Helen Mirren, really leaned in to it.
As did Gemma Chan, from Crazy Rich Asians, who mostly pulled it off.
… This Maya Rudolph get-up, on the other hand, makes me feel vaguely queasy.
I was politely asked to drop General Maths in Year 12 but am still fairly confident I’ve got the numbers right when I say ruffles + high neckline + cape + pink + florals = TOO MUCH.
Pose star and Tony Award winner Billy Porter served up a fierce fashion offering in a black velvet tuxedo gown — and it’s exactly what I imagine Wednesday Addams would wear to the Oscars.
Eighth Grade’s Elsie Fisher pulled off her edgy Oscars tuxedo with sleek hair and patent boots.
While Porter and Fisher opted for black, elsewhere on the red carpet, it was a sea of metallics and colour.
As news.com.au style commentator Melissa Hoyer explained, this year was all about “colour, colour, colour, with bright and rich colours also starring, unlike previous years when sheer, skin-like & nude hues and a sea of black would take over the ruby rug.”
Emilia Clarke — Daenarys Targaryen from Game of Thrones — was the picture of timeless elegance in a form-fitting purple bejewelled strapless dress.
Crazy Rich Asians star Constance Wu gave off serious Disney Belle vibes while looking radiant in a canary yellow dress — and she knew it.
Her co-star Awkwafina channelled Liberace:
Jessica Jones star Krysten Ritter confirmed she is pregnant with her first child with partner Adam Granduciel, debuting her baby bump for the first time on the Oscars red carpet.
It comes just a fortnight after Netflix confirmed the series will end after season three.
Best Actress favourite Glenn Close, star of The Wife, sweetened her chances of winning by arriving as an actual Oscars statue — and it was perfection.
Vice star and Best Supporting Actress nominee Amy Adams knocked it out of the park in this timeless white and silver outfit.
Brie Larson, who is also one of this year’s presenters, also donned a striking silver gown.
Longtime blonde Charlize Theron has changed it up with a sleek brunette bob for this year’s event.
Amandla Stenberg, the breakout star of critically-acclaimed drama The Hate U Give, was flawless in her embellished silver and nude gown.
Best Actress nominee Melissa McCarthy, who stars in Can You Ever Forgive Me?, also opted in to this year’s pants trend.
Michelle Yeoh (Crazy Rich Asians) looked like Glinda, the Good Witch:
