THOUGHT Jimmy Kimmel’s Oscars opening monologue was a bit lacklustre? There was a lavish, hilarious song to open the show that got scrapped, and it’s now online.

IF YOU found Jimmy Kimmel’s opening monologue at yesterday’s Academy Awards ceremony a little lacklustre, it turns out there’s a good reason why: a lavish opening song penned especially for the awards was rejected by Oscars producers.

US musical comedy trio The Lonely Island — Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone — were tasked with writing a number to open yesterday’s Oscars ceremony.

OSCARS AFTERPARTIES: STARS LET LOOSE

The song they submitted was called Why Not Me?, and was to be a hilarious look at the fact that beloved genre films like Thor, Wonder Woman and It are overlooked by the Academy.

“I guess that’s what you get when you’re not classically handsome,” IT’s villain Pennywise the Clown sings of his Oscar snub. “Oscars so white, but I guess not for me.”

Elsewhere in the song, which The Lonely Island uploaded to their YouTube account after the ceremony, five of Hollywood’s most famous Chrises — Hemsworth, Pratt, Pine, Rock and Evans — unite to demand a special “Best Chris” category.

The song would also have featured Michael Fassbender lamenting the fact that his 2017 film The Snowman was a critically derided box office flop.

The members of The Lonely Island stand in for the aforementioned celebs in the demo version of the song, and it’s not clear if any of the stars portrayed had actually agreed to take part — least of all Fassbender, who would’ve been required to sing about his film’s dismal 7% Rotten Tomatoes approval rating.

“We were asked to write a song for this year’s Academy Awards,” the trio captioned the video.

“Unfortunately, it wasn’t chosen because it was ‘financially and logistically impossible’, so for fun we thought we’d share the rough storyboards of what would have been a fully shot, star-studded music video of exorbitant cost. All vocals and visuals are temp, so please use your imagination and enjoy!”

Best known for raunchy comedy hits like I Just Had Sex and Dick In A Box, The Lonely Island previously performed at the 2015 Oscars, singing their The Lego Movie theme song Everything Is Awesome.
