5 year oldBut upon closer scrutiny, the actress landing the titular role of Ariel wasn’t Academy Award-winning Berry but 19-year-old singer Halle Bailey, half of the sisters act Chloe x Halle. The R&B duo scored big-time exposure in February at Super Bowl LIII with its sparkling rendition of “America the Beautiful.”
“I can’t be the only person who saw news that 'Halle Bailey is the Little Mermaid” and got very confused because my mind misspelled her last name to make it read ‘Halle Berry is The Little Mermaid,’ right? posted Twitter user Germain Lussier.
Despite the initial confusion, plenty of Hollywood heavy hitters offered congrats to the young star, including Berry herself.
“In case you needed a reminder . . . Halles get it DONE,” tweeted the 52-year-old “X-Men” star. “Congratulations on this amazing opportunity, we can’t wait to see what you do!”

Berry, who became the first Academy Award Best Actress winner for 2001′s “Monster’s Ball,” is no stranger to touting achievements by black actors. In 2000, she snagged the trifecta of Emmy Award, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award for the HBO film “Introducing Dorothy Dandridge." The film chronicles the rise of the legendary singer-actress who became the first African-American woman to be nominated for a Best Actress Oscar in 1954′s “Carmen Jones.”
In her Oscar acceptance speech, Berry tearfully lauded Dandridge as a woman who helped pave the way for her and countless other African-American actresses’ success.
Also heaping praise on Bailey was “Euphoria” star Zendaya, who simply tweeted, “Yeeeeessss!! Here for thiiiissss!”
