France’s first evacuation plane left Niger on Tuesday with more than 250 people on board, Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna said. France had said it planned to evacuate its nationals and EU citizens from the West African country following a military coup last Wednesday that unleashed protests against the former colonial power. The African Union and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Wednesday condemned an “attempted coup d'État" in Niger and called for President Mohamed Bazoum to be liberated amid reports that members of the presidential guard were holding him inside his palace. The EU's foreign policy chief said Brussels was also "very concerned about current events in Niamey".
